Prison Chaplain Shares Monastic Spirituality
If you wonder how the Joan Chittister Fund for Prisoners, which offers spirituality materials to people incarcerated across the country, operates during a time of pandemic lockdowns, read this section of a letter from a prison chaplain:
“I receive 35 copies of The Monastic Way—I have gotten more ladies interested––would it be possible to increase the copies to 53? Thank you.
Our situation here is a bit different. I do/did go to the Women’s Maximum Security Correctional Institution. However, since the pandemic started, the Warden and Chaplain have not allowed any volunteers to enter the Institutions–even for religious services. So what I do each month is mail the ladies The Monastic Way and include a personal letter reflecting on Sr Joan’s writings. I am told the ladies LOVE receiving the brochures.
Several years ago-before the pandemic I received copies of Sr Joan’s Journal—at that time I was able to go into the Institution and weekly we discussed the Journal entries.
At this time–that is all I can tell you. Hopefully the visitor restrictions will be lifted and we will be able to resume our weekly faith gatherings.”
Please continue to hold in prayer all those who are in prison, and consider making a donation to the Joan Chittister Fund for Prisoners if you are able. Learn more about the Joan Chittister Fund for Prisoners here.
