In Prison and You Visited
The Joan Chittister Fund for Prisoners continues to provide spirituality materials by Sister Joan to those incarcerated in prisons across the country. Last week, we received a letter from a man in prison in California that shows why this work is so essential. He wrote, in part:
“Dear Joan,
For the last 20 years, I’ve been reading The Monastic Way via your charity that helps prisoners. I’ve been incarcerated for over 43 years. It’s been quite the journey from darkness to light. Your wisdom is far reaching, seeming to come at just the right moments in my life, like this week, when I was working on my closing statement for my next parole hearing. When I read what you wrote about a woman’s life in a man’s church, world, definitions, and job structure, for once in my life, I really got it. Putting myself in a woman’s shoes, I tried not to fall down, thinking of the women who suffered because of my violence so long ago…. Thank you for all your work helping others and for helping men like myself who were once engulfed by the dark of the soul. May God bless you.”
